Heroes of Science and Fiction takes clear inspiration from the classic Heroes of Might & Magic formula, even in it’s name of course, transporting its turn-based exploration and army management into a science fiction setting.

The result is both familiar and refreshing. The classic core 4X mechanics feel natural from experience, but the shift in theme combined with new systems and ideas gives the experience its own identity. The world carries a lighter, not-too-serious tone that complements the gameplay well and makes the overall presentation easy to enjoy.

Across roughly three hours of play, having just released from early access, felt polished and was a smooth experience. Exploration, combat, and progression all felt engaging, supported by a clean art style that reinforces the game’s personality.

While only a short session was completed, the desire to return is already present. The campaign has only just begun, and further time will be required to see how the systems hold up over longer play.

For now, Heroes of Science and Fiction is officially listed as Alive, with additional expeditions expected when time permits. Really do want more of this one so let’s hope the new releases quiet down.

Pronouncement: Still alive.
